Messages of fear and shame are present throughout abstinence-only-until-marriage curricula and discussions of STDs are no different. Students are told that people who have STDs are “dirty” and should be ashamed. Such assertions do nothing to explain how STDs are actually transmitted and can only further discourage young people from seeking testing and treatment should they suspect they may have an STD.
